Overview
In July 2026 Austria announced a €17 million two‑year programme to finish flood‑protection works on the Danube at four sites, adding river‑renaturation measures after the costly 2002 and 2024 floods. By early August, Germany launched a €2 billion expansion of the Danube between Deggendorf and Vilshofen to deepen the navigation channel and build new dikes for 100‑year flood protection. At the same time, Austria faced an unprecedented low‑water period, prompting the federal waterway authority and viadonau to allocate €30 million a year for maintenance, flexible infrastructure and cross‑border cooperation, as cargo traffic fell sharply.
Together the two initiatives illustrate a coordinated regional effort to strengthen the Danube’s resilience against flooding while maintaining its role as a major transport artery.
