Germany and Austria face severe summer holiday traffic snarls
A protest on the Fernpass in Tirol blocked the road on Saturday, 1 August, between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Demonstrators demanded changes to tunnel projects, tolls and traffic volume. Police warned of major delays on the north‑south corridor to Austria and Italy and advised travelers to depart early or use alternate routes.
The ADAC issued a weekend warning of heightened congestion on several German autobahns—including the A1, A7 and A95—as well as on Austrian routes such as the Tauern and Karawanken. Construction sites, road closures and the start of school holidays across most German states contribute to the slowdown.
Road police carried out a “Safe Holiday” ROADPOL check on the A24, inspecting 57 drivers of motorhomes and caravans. Over‑weight vehicles, child‑seat violations and a few other infractions resulted in fines and warnings.
In Austria, the ÖAMTC flagged the A9 Pyhrn Autobahn and the B320 Ennstal as the most affected stretches in Styria, where holiday traffic toward the Adriatic, the Ennstal‑Classic rally and the Formula‑1 Grand Prix in Hungary add further pressure.
Around Hamburg, the ADAC warned that the A1, A7, A20/A21/A23/A24 and several other routes will see heavy traffic this weekend, compounded by about 1,000 construction sites and possible border‑control delays.
