Heavy holiday and event traffic expected in DE, AT, and LU
Overview
As the summer holiday season concludes, heavy traffic congestion is expected across Germany, Austria, and neighboring regions during the final weekend of August (August 27 to 30).
In Germany and Luxembourg, significant return traffic is anticipated as school holidays end in North Rhine-Westphalia, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and the Czech Republic. The ADAC predicts peak volumes on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. In Germany, approximately 1,000 construction sites remain active; certain exits on the A7, A8, and A93 near the Alps may be closed to prevent spillover. In Luxembourg, the A3 and A6 are expected to be heavily affected.
In Austria, ARBÖ and ÖAMTC have warned of significant delays. While Saturday was projected to be the busiest travel day, actual conditions on Saturday, August 29, saw heavy delays in Tyrol, Carinthia, and Salzburg caused by both travel volume and accidents. Notable disruptions included block-processing at the Karawanken Tunnel (A11) between Carinthia and Slovenia, and delays on the Fernpass (B179) and Tauern Autobahn (A10) due to an accident in a construction zone. Additionally, a caravan accident caused a six-kilometer jam on the Pyhrn Autobahn (A9), and accidents led to stoppages at the Loibl Pass.
Large-scale sporting events have also contributed to road closures, including the IRONMAN 70.3 in Zell am See-Kaprun (affecting roads B311, B168, and B164), the 45th Ötztaler Radmarathon in Tirol, and the ‘Kärnten Läuft’ half marathon near Lake Wörthersee. In Vienna, traffic is impacted by the Gürtel Nightwalk, a football match between Rapid Wien and Sturm Graz, and a concert at the Wiener Stadthalle.
