Austria considers ban on Muslim Brotherhood and political Islam

Austrian Integration Minister Claudia Bauer (ÖVP) is calling for a ban on the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist organizations, including Hezbollah and Hizb ut-Tahrir. Bauer is currently drafting a proposal to ban “political Islam,” which she describes as an “invisible infiltration” of established institutions. She noted that while certain symbols are prohibited, organizations can still be founded under current laws, necessitating changes to association, assembly, and residency laws.

Bauer indicated that the Islamic Religious Community in Austria (IGGÖ) could be affected by such a ban and has demanded a clear statement from the group regarding its boundaries.

In a separate political debate, Freedom Party (FPÖ) official Maximilian Krauss criticized SPÖ politician Omar Al-Rawi for his stance on the ban of headscarves for girls under 14. Krauss argued that Al-Rawi is misusing religious freedom to defend oppressive norms, claiming that such arguments serve the political interests of political Islam rather than individual rights.
