Austria debates political Islam ban amid social tension study

A new study presented by Austrian Integration Minister Claudia Bauer reveals significant social tensions regarding migration and religious influence in Austria. According to the research conducted by the Austrian Integration Fund, 52 percent of respondents identify “political Islam” as a major negative influence on social coexistence, ranking it alongside war and terrorism.

The data indicates that half of the population would feel disturbed by having Muslims as direct neighbors. Furthermore, concerns regarding cultural identity have risen sharply, with 70 percent of respondents expressing such worries compared to 57 percent in 2018. The study also highlights widespread apprehension regarding large-scale migration movements and the impact of digitalization.

These findings have intensified the domestic political debate, with the ÖVP pushing for a constitutional ban on “political Islam” to protect the rule of law. While government representatives argue such a measure is necessary to prevent the undermining of democracy, constitutional jurists have warned of significant legal hurdles, and the Islamic Religious Community in Austria (IGGÖ) has expressed concerns regarding a potential “general suspicion” against the faith.
