Austria deploys police to Vienna as Vorarlberg receives extra officers to address staffing gaps

The Austrian Interior Ministry has dispatched police officers from several federal states to Vienna for a focused operation against youth crime. Six officers from Lower Austria and additional personnel from Upper Austria, Styria and Burgenland are rotating in the capital.

In contrast, the Vorarlberg police force, facing a "precarious" staffing situation, is being reinforced with ten to twenty officers from Styria and Upper Austria. The reinforcements are assigned to the Rapid Response Unit, which is largely composed of newly trained officers gaining practical experience.

Union leaders have criticised the deployments. Lower Austria’s police union warns that sending officers to Vienna will create shortages at home, while SPÖ security spokesperson Mario Leiter calls for a regional pay bonus to retain staff in high‑cost areas such as Vorarlberg. The police directorate cites ongoing training programmes, with dozens of new recruits starting this year, as a longer‑term solution.
