Austrian police and border security actions

In late July 2026, Austria’s interior ministry emphasized cross‑border security, hosting Hungary’s interior minister in Vienna to expand cooperation against organised smuggling. The joint “Operation Fox” programme, launched in December 2022, was highlighted for arresting 251 smugglers and cutting illegal crossings on the Burgenland‑Hungary frontier from thousands to just a handful within weeks. The talks also covered the development of Return Hubs for rejected asylum seekers and deeper coordination with foreign‑registration authorities.

By early August 2026, the focus shifted to domestic policing challenges. The ministry redeployed officers from several Austrian states to Vienna for a targeted operation against youth crime, while the Vorarlberg police received additional personnel to bolster a rapid‑response unit strained by staffing shortages. Union leaders criticised the redeployments, warning of gaps in other regions and calling for pay incentives.

In mid-August, the ministry announced that starting in September, temporary police assignments from federal states to Vienna will be extended from single days to up to three months to improve “economic efficiency and operational effectiveness.” This expansion will include officers from Salzburg and Carinthia joining those from Styria, Burgenland, Lower Austria, and Upper Austria. The Federal Police Directorate stated the reinforcement responds to the “concentrated appearance of migrant youth groups” involved in territorial disputes, robberies, and drug-related offenses. Operations will focus on public spaces and parks during nighttime hours.

While many officers have volunteered, regional safety concerns persist. Statistics indicate a sharp rise in violence against law enforcement in Burgenland, where attacks surged by over 2,300 percent between 2023 and 2024, resulting in 24 injuries to officers, including five serious cases. This occurs even as nationwide violence against police has decreased by approximately 5.7 percent.
