Austria expands tourism with new pilgrim‑route portal and farm‑holiday model
A new online portal, pilgern.at, went live in July 2026 to promote Austria as a pilgrim destination. It aggregates around 100 pilgrimage routes covering roughly 30,000 km and offers a free digital pilgrim pass and a network for walkers.
The long‑standing “Urlaub am Bauernhof” programme, launched 35 years ago, continues to grow in the Burgenland region. About 120 farms now provide roughly 1,000 beds, focusing on wine, cycling and authentic farm experiences. The sector supports around 23,000 jobs, generates significant supplemental income for farmers, and operates as a year‑round tourism offering.
