Austria and Italy extend or reform border security measures

Austria has extended temporary border controls on its frontiers with Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Slovenia until March 15, 2027. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner stated the measures aim to combat human smuggling and irregular migration. The Austrian approach is shifting toward a more flexible system of mobile, targeted patrols in border regions rather than relying solely on stationary checkpoints.

In a separate development, Italy is considering replacing its current Schengen border suspensions at the Slovenian frontier with alternative security measures once the existing extension expires in December. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Slovenian Minister Tone Kajzer discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation, including joint police patrols similar to the model used on the Italy-France border.

These actions reflect ongoing efforts by several European nations to manage migration flows and security risks while navigating the regulations of the Schengen Agreement.
