Central European border control extensions

Central European nations have moved to extend border security measures into 2027.

In August 2026, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced plans to extend German border controls until at least March 2027. During his announcement, Dobrindt also addressed political polarization in the country.

Following this, the Austrian government decided to extend border controls at its frontiers with the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Slovenia until at least March 15, 2027. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner stated the measures aim to combat illegal migration and human smuggling by preventing the activities of smugglers and criminals. To improve efficiency, Austrian authorities have transitioned toward a more flexible surveillance system rather than relying solely on permanent checkpoints.

In September 2026, developments expanded to include Italy. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Slovenian Minister Tone Kajzer discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation to manage security at the Slovenian frontier. Italy is considering replacing current Schengen border suspensions with alternative measures, such as joint police patrols, once existing extensions expire in December. These actions reflect broader efforts by European nations to manage migration flows and security risks while navigating Schengen Agreement regulations.
