Austria faces apprenticeship shortages and teacher recruitment challenges

Austria is facing distinct challenges within its education and labor sectors. In the apprenticeship market, there is a significant imbalance, with approximately 5,000 job seekers competing for only 500 available positions. The Austrian Public Employment Service (AMS) has noted a decline in available spots and is calling for more training positions in businesses. The Vienna Chamber of Commerce indicated that rising requirements for apprentices have made it more difficult for companies to find suitable candidates. Current vacancies are most prevalent in retail, gastronomy, and installation and heating technology.

Simultaneously, Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr is addressing teacher shortages by utilizing career changers. Currently, about ten percent of newly hired teachers are professionals from other sectors who are completing pedagogical training alongside their work. Wiederkehr views this ten percent as a sensible upper limit for maintaining quality while benefiting from private-sector experience. While he intends to maintain current training models, he aims to improve the onboarding process for these educators to reduce high workloads and role ambiguity.
