Austria faces gap in health insurance coverage for thousands

A study commissioned by the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) reveals that several thousand people in Austria lack health insurance coverage, despite the country's comprehensive system. Depending on the scenario, up to 0.6 percent of the resident population—potentially as many as 57,000 people—may be without protection against illness.

Researchers noted that individuals often fall through the cracks of the insurance system during transitions in status or due to extraordinary life circumstances. Data from medical centers showed significant numbers of uninsured patients: 2,697 at AmberMed in Vienna, 2,221 at the Marienambulanz in Graz, and 96 at the Virgilambulanz in Salzburg.

Experts, including Martin Schenk of Diakonie Österreich and Michael Fuchs from the European Center for Welfare Policy and Social Research, suggest that the actual number of uninsured individuals could range from several thousand to tens of thousands. The study calls for improvements in social assistance, better protection for children, and guaranteed access to emergency medical facilities for those without coverage.
