Austria faces political instability amid SPÖ crisis and media funding deal
Political instability in Austria is intensifying due to a leadership crisis within the SPÖ and ongoing negotiations regarding media subsidies. While the SPÖ undergoes internal restructuring and leadership changes, the Freiheitliche Wirtschaft (FW) has criticized the government for prioritizing political maneuvering over economic stability. FW representative René Schachner emphasized that businesses are struggling with high costs, bureaucracy, and a projected national budget deficit of approximately 22 billion euros for 2026.
In a separate development, government leaders reached an agreement on a media funding package following months of stalled negotiations. The deal includes 24 million euros each for the years 2027 and 2028 to support digital transformation. However, the agreement has faced criticism from owners of free newspapers, who claim the package lacks necessary delivery subsidies. Additionally, the government is moving to implement EU directives against SLAPP lawsuits and addressing legal issues regarding social media postings.
