SPÖ leadership instability and polling decline

The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) is facing internal instability and leadership speculation driven by record-low polling numbers. Recent surveys indicate party support has dropped to between 14 and 17 percent, a significant decline from its 21.1 percent result in the September 2024 National Council election. This decline has placed the SPÖ well behind the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP).

In response to these figures, Vice-Chancellor Andreas Babler has faced calls for personnel changes from party members and union leaders. While Babler described the leadership debates as media-driven, he acknowledged that the polling results are “not pleasing.” Internal tensions were recently exacerbated by a misunderstood meeting invitation from Babler’s office, which fueled rumors regarding potential resignations or major restructuring. Potential successors mentioned in speculation include former ORF chief Gerhard Zeiler and Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer, though Marterbauer’s current cancer treatment makes a leadership change unlikely.

However, Wolfgang Katzian, head of the Austrian Trade Union Federation (ÖGB), has moved to defend Babler. Katzian dismissed the debates regarding leadership changes, stating that replacing individuals would not improve polling numbers. He argued that the discussion regarding Babler’s position should be considered concluded, noting that Babler was re-elected only six months ago. Katzian suggested the party should instead focus on improving living conditions, advocating for increased insolvency compensation funds and renewed margin caps on energy companies to regain credibility.
