Austria faces rising corporate insolvencies amid economic uncertainty
Austria is experiencing a significant rise in business failures, with 5,150 companies filing for insolvency in the first nine months of 2026. This averages approximately 19 businesses per day. Notably, in 43 percent of these cases, existing assets were insufficient to even initiate formal insolvency proceedings.
While some economic indicators suggest a cautious recovery—with WIFO forecasting growth of 0.9 percent this year and 1.3 percent in 2027—structural challenges persist. Experts highlight rising unit labor costs, high energy prices, and intense international competition, particularly from China, as major burdens on the industrial sector.
Economic observers note that while industry shows signs of improvement, consumer spending and investment remain weak. Concerns have also been raised regarding low productivity, declining working hours per capita, and an over-reliance on bank financing due to a lack of available venture capital.
