Austria health study shows high AI usage for medical queries
A health study conducted by the Gallup Institute for Wiener Städtische insurance reveals that 60 percent of Austrians have used artificial intelligence to address health-related questions. Approximately 40 percent of respondents found the AI assistance helpful, frequently using it to research symptoms or simplify complex medical findings. While 13 percent of participants rated AI information as more trustworthy than medical advice, the majority still place higher trust in doctors.
Users reported positive emotional responses to using AI, specifically citing feelings of reassurance, relief, and increased control. Manuel Schalk, Managing Director at Wiener Städtische, noted that while AI is becoming a primary point of contact for health queries, it should be viewed as a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, professional medical consultation.
The study also highlighted trends in general well-being and the healthcare system. While roughly 60 percent of respondents feel physically and mentally fit, there has been a reported decline in physical health over the past year. Additionally, the survey noted growing criticism of the public healthcare system and an increasing interest in private health insurance.
