Austria implements new e-moped restrictions on bicycle paths
Starting October 1, e-mopeds in Austria will be prohibited from using bicycle paths and must instead operate on the roadway. The Vienna Police stated that this regulation aims to increase traffic safety and provide clearer distinctions between different modes of transport.
While authorities intend to focus on information and education during the initial phase, there is no grace period where only warnings are issued. Violators may face immediate fines or have their continued travel prohibited. Under the Motor Vehicle Act, fines for violations can reach up to 10,000 euros, though the final amount is determined by the specific circumstances of each case.
E-mopeds will now be subject to requirements including registration, license plates, insurance, valid driving permits, and mandatory helmet use. The ÖAMTC estimates that approximately 20,000 private individuals will be affected by these changes.
