Austria implements new education reforms and school data transparency
Austria is implementing new educational reforms at both the municipal and national levels. In Vienna, Education Councilor Bettina Emmerling has launched a process to redesign the funding system for private kindergartens. Assisted by the organizational consultancy Malthus, the initiative aims to create a transparent, controllable, and sustainable system. The goal is to establish minimum standards, increase inclusion placements, and better support language acquisition while ensuring a fair distribution of challenges between municipal and private providers.
Nationally, Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr has begun publishing school data to increase transparency for parents. The Ministry is releasing results from the “individual competence measurement PLUS” (iKM PLUS) for primary schools across Austria. To ensure fair comparisons, the data ranks schools within the upper, middle, or lower third relative to others with similar socioeconomic backgrounds. Schools are categorized into six levels based on the socioeconomic status of their student populations, ranging from challenging environments to more favorable conditions.
