Marchtrenk investigation: Husband suspected of drugging wife for sexual abuse
Austrian authorities are investigating the death of a 39-year-old woman in Marchtrenk, Upper Austria, following allegations of systemic sexual abuse. The case, which media have dubbed ‘Pelicot 2.0’ due to its similarities to the French Gisèle Pelicot case, involves the victim's 51-year-old husband and a neighbor, both of whom are currently in custody.
The victim was discovered by her teenage daughter on June 25, lying on a waterbed. While the husband initially claimed the death was an accident during rough sex, an autopsy revealed severe internal injuries. Digital forensics revealed the husband had searched for ways to drug a person days before the death, and investigators found he had disposed of the waterbed and deleted a mobile application following the incident.
Prosecutors allege the husband drugged his wife over an extended period and allowed other men to sexually abuse her, potentially in exchange for payments of up to 500 Euros. A neighbor has confessed to two instances of sexual abuse against the woman. Investigators are currently examining chat messages to determine if a wider rape network exists and if additional perpetrators were involved.
