Rise in reported abductions in Austria

Overview

Reports indicate a significant increase in abductions within Austria. In the first half of 2026, 92 cases were reported, a figure that exceeds the combined total of 160 cases recorded throughout 2024 and 2025.

Meltem Weiland, head of the National Competence Center against Abduction and Domestic Violence at the PeriFeri association, described the rise as “concerning.” The reported incidents frequently involve children being taken to their home countries by parents as a “disciplinary measure,” often with the intent of forced marriage abroad.

Women are also being targeted; they are reportedly lured abroad and abandoned by husbands as punishment for marital disputes or divorce filings. Common destinations for these abductions include Russia, Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The center noted that the volume of cases has occasionally overwhelmed staff, citing an instance where “five cases were reported in four minutes.”
