Germany sees boom in battery storage installations
Germany is experiencing a significant surge in battery storage capacity. According to the German Solar Association (BSW-Solar), approximately 500,000 new battery storage systems have been commissioned in the country so far this year.
Data from the market master data register for the first nine months of the year shows a total capacity of 8.2 gigawatt-hours, representing a 91 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025. The association expects the total number of new installations for the first nine months to reach approximately 534,000, with total annual capacity additions potentially exceeding 10 gigawatt-hours.
A notable trend is the rapid growth of large-scale storage systems. The number of large-scale installations (exceeding one megawatt) rose from 63 to 220, increasing their capacity from 0.9 to 3.8 gigawatt-hours. This growth in large-scale capacity has surpassed the capacity additions seen in the residential segment, which grew from 2.6 to 3.2 gigawatt-hours.
