Germany PV adoption & expanding battery storage

Overview

Germany’s renewable transition is increasingly defined by a shift toward integrated solar and battery storage to combat grid instability and price volatility. While residential PV adoption continues through modular solutions, the industry is pivoting toward energy storage as the primary growth sector to mitigate the “duck curve” effect.

Recent data from Destatis indicates a significant reduction in fossil fuel reliance, with consumption dropping from 174,600 million kWh in the first half of 2018 to 94,200 million kWh in the first half of 2026. Between January and June 2026, renewable energy sources accounted for 59.1% of electricity production, a 6.5% increase over the previous year. Wind power remains the primary source, growing by 12.3% to reach 67,700 million kWh.

To support this transition, large-scale battery projects are repurposing former energy sites. In Bavaria, investment firm Advisum plans to convert the former Isar II nuclear power plant into a massive battery storage facility with a capacity of up to 900 MW. In Schleswig-Holstein, Vattenfall has made a final investment decision for a 254-megawatt facility at the former Brunsbüttel nuclear site, which will have a capacity of up to 1,000 MWh and is expected to be operational by late 2028. Localized efforts also continue, such as ESWE BioEnergie’s 11 MW / 30 MWh lithium-ion project near its biomass heating plant in Wiesbaden, which aims to balance fluctuations by utilizing existing infrastructure.

Beyond lithium-ion technology, German researchers are developing thermal energy storage systems using molten salts. These systems aim to store excess energy as heat to address the variability of solar and wind production, helping to stabilize the grid during periods of low renewable output.
