Austria moves to ban “political Islam” via constitutional amendment
The Austrian government is working on a constitutional amendment to ban “political Islam” within the country. Proposed by Chancellor Christian Stocker, the initiative aims to outlaw extremist Islamist organizations that use religion for political purposes. Stocker argued that such interpretations of Islam are incompatible with democracy and Western values, stating that the state must prevent preachers from dictating matters instead of parliament.
Minister for Integration and European Affairs, Claudia Bauer, is leading the effort to develop the legal framework. The proposal seeks to distinguish between Islam as a religion and the extremist ideology categorized as political Islam. This distinction follows a 2025 designation by the Austrian Chancellery of political Islam as a national security threat.
To support these efforts, the government utilizes the Documentation Centre for Political Islam, which monitors foreign influence in Austrian mosques and associations from entities such as the Turkish Directorate of Religious Affairs. While coalition partners including the SPÖ and Neos have expressed openness to the measure to increase national security, the far-right FPÖ has rejected the proposal, citing political friction with the ÖVP.
