Austria private bankruptcy driven by former self-employment and personal debt
According to data from the Credit Protection Association of 1870 (KSV1870), the primary drivers for private bankruptcies in Austria in 2025 are former self-employment and personal debt. Former self-employment was the leading cause, accounting for 28.3% of cases, an increase of 1.6 percentage points from the previous year.
Personal debt followed closely at 27.8%. When analyzing only cases involving pure private consumers—excluding those linked to former self-employment—personal debt becomes the most frequent cause. This category is often attributed to excessive consumer behavior and the overestimation of one's financial capabilities over time.
Demographic trends show significant age-based differences. For individuals under 25, personal debt is the most common cause at 35.2%, and for those aged 25 to 40, it remains the top reason at 31.8%. Conversely, for individuals aged 41 and older, former self-employment is the most frequent cause of insolvency.
Overall, 8,766 debt regulation proceedings were opened in Austria, representing a slight decrease of 0.6% compared to 2024. Income reduction remains the third most common cause at 16%.
