Trends in Austrian private and corporate insolvencies
Overview
In the first half of 2026, Austria experienced a 4.8% increase in private insolvency procedures, totaling 4,718 cases. While corporate insolvencies fell by 7.69% during that period, analysts at CRIF Austria attributed the rise in private cases to economic uncertainty and high living costs.
By late 2026, data from the Credit Protection Association of 1870 (KSV1870) indicated that 8,766 debt regulation proceedings had been opened. Former self-employment emerged as the leading driver of bankruptcy, accounting for 28.3% of cases, followed closely by personal debt at 27.8%. When excluding former self-employment, personal debt becomes the most frequent cause among pure private consumers, often linked to excessive consumer behavior.
Demographic trends show a clear divide: for individuals under 40, personal debt is the primary cause—reaching 35.2% for those under 25—while former self-employment is the leading factor for those aged 41 and older. Experts have described the early accumulation of debt among younger populations as an ‘alarming signal,’ emphasizing the need for improved financial education.
More recent reports suggest a potential stabilization in the Austrian market. Corporate insolvencies decreased by 1.5%, signaling a possible end to the insolvency wave as industrial and trade sectors show signs of recovery. However, private insolvencies saw a short-term increase, attributed to the expiration of favorable repayment plans. According to Creditreform, total corporate and private insolvencies for the first half of 2026 reached 8,535 cases.
