Austria proposes constitutional ban on political Islam

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker and the ÖVP are proposing a constitutional ban on 'political Islam' to protect democracy and social values. Integration Minister Claudia Bauer is reportedly working on a legislative proposal that would include stricter regulations for religious communities and associations, potentially amending association and cult laws.

The move has drawn diverse reactions. The State Intelligence Service (DSN) has expressed support for increased legal measures against legalistic Islamism. While the SPÖ and NEOS have indicated openness to discussing the proposals, they have called for legally sound and enforceable frameworks. Conversely, the FPÖ has criticized the announcement as a 'substanceless PR stunt,' arguing that the ÖVP has previously rejected similar measures and that concrete action is needed rather than rhetoric.

In addition to the proposed ban, the government is discussing economic measures such as a 'future deposit' (Zukunftsdepot) to support long-term wealth building for the next generation. However, the focus remains on the security and integration debate, with critics questioning the legal compatibility of a constitutional ban with existing religious freedoms.
