Austria reports 671 antisemitic incidents in first half of 2026
The Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien (IKG) reported 671 antisemitic incidents in Austria during the first half of 2026. While this represents a slight decrease from the 726 incidents recorded during the same period in 2025, the figure remains more than double the 311 incidents documented in the first half of 2023, prior to the Hamas attacks on October 7.
Of the documented cases, 191 were attributed to a Muslim background, 162 to a left-wing background, and 147 to a right-wing background. For 171 incidents, no clear ideological affiliation could be determined. The reported incidents included 12 physical attacks, 18 threats, 68 cases of property damage, 226 mass mailings, and 347 instances of offensive behavior.
IKG President Oskar Deutsch stated that the situation has become a permanent state of emergency, noting that antisemitic rhetoric is increasingly followed by threats and physical attacks. The IKG also noted that international conflicts, such as the tensions between Israel and Iran, have directly influenced local incident rates, with a significant spike observed in March.
