Religious discrimination and hate in Austria

Reports from civil society and official institutions in Austria indicate significant levels of religious-based hate and discrimination.

Data from the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien (IKG) shows that 671 antisemitic incidents occurred in the first half of 2026. While this was a slight decrease from the 726 incidents in the first half of 2025, it remains more than double the 311 incidents recorded in the first half of 2023. IKG President Oskar Deutsch described the situation as a “permanent state of emergency,” noting that international tensions have directly influenced local incident rates.

Simultaneously, reports highlight a rise in Islamophobia and discrimination against Muslims. The Dokustelle 2025 report documented 1,684 incidents, with 63.1% occurring online. Data from the Austrian Equal Treatment Ombudsman Board (GAW) indicates that 87% of religious discrimination cases involved Muslims, with women comprising 90% of those victims. Furthermore, the Austrian Parliament noted a 33% increase in discrimination cases handled by the GAW over a two-year period, with many incidents linked to professional life, housing, and services.
