Austria reports stable teacher staffing for new school year

As the new school year begins in Austria, the Ministry of Education reports that teacher requirements are largely met across most regions, though some localized shortages persist.

In the Mostviertel region of Lower Austria, approximately 115 new teachers have been hired for compulsory schools. Regional education leader Dietmar Nahringbauer stated that schools are well-staffed for the upcoming term, despite a slight decrease in the number of first-grade students compared to last year.

Nationally, while positions in Vienna and Burgenland are fully occupied, specific challenges remain. Vorarlberg faces a comparatively tense situation, partly due to teachers moving to Switzerland for higher salaries. Other areas, such as parts of Upper Austria, Tyrol, and Salzburg, report isolated needs for specific subjects, minority school systems, or teachers in geographically remote locations. Total vacancies include 288 positions in compulsory schools and 58 in federal schools.
