Austria seeks to expand export potential through Africa Strategy
The ninth Africa Day, organized by the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKÖ), brought together approximately 900 participants from Austria and 30 African nations to discuss business opportunities and partnerships. The event highlighted Africa's growing importance as a geopolitical partner and a region of economic growth.
Austrian goods exports to Africa rose by 7.4 percent in 2025, reaching 2.32 billion euros. Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger noted that the federal government's Africa Strategy aims for mutually beneficial partnerships involving investments and job creation. WKÖ Vice President Carmen Goby emphasized that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can find opportunities in sectors such as environmental and water technology, agricultural technology, and healthcare.
While official discourse focuses on a radical new beginning through partnership-based economic cooperation and moving away from traditional donor-recipient models, some critiques suggest the strategy remains heavily driven by export interests and migration management.
