Austria sees growth in pumpkin oil production and culinary tourism

Austria is seeing a significant rise in the cultivation of oil pumpkins, particularly in Upper Austria. In Linz-Land, pumpkin cultivation now accounts for 2.5 percent of agricultural land. While oil can be pressed from various pumpkin seeds, the Styrian oil pumpkin is the primary variety used in the country due to its higher oil content and thinner shells.

Parallel to agricultural growth, culinary experiences are becoming a primary driver for tourism in Austria. According to studies by Österreich Werbung, approximately one-third of guests choose a region based on its culinary offerings, and 64 percent of US travelers have selected a destination due to food. To capitalize on this, new initiatives like the ‘eatArtists’ campaign have been launched to promote high-quality gastronomy and regional authenticity.
