Austria shows majority opposition to banning ChatGPT in schools

According to the Ipsos Global Education Monitor, a majority of Austrians oppose banning AI applications like ChatGPT in schools. Approximately 48 percent of respondents in Austria reject an AI ban, while only 34 percent support one. This stance is slightly more permissive than the international average, where support for an AI ban stands at 39 percent.

In contrast, there is stronger support for restricting other technologies in educational settings. In Austria, 62 percent of people favor a ban on smartphones in schools, which is higher than the international average of 57 percent. Additionally, 72 percent of Austrians believe children under 14 should not have access to social media, closely mirroring the global average of 73 percent.

The study also highlighted a significant generational divide regarding smartphone bans: only 36 percent of Generation Z supported such a measure, compared to 69 percent of Baby Boomers. Regarding general satisfaction with education, 36 percent of Austrians expressed satisfaction with their school system, performing slightly better than the international average of 33 percent.
