Austria strengthens natural gas reserves to ensure energy security

Austria is maintaining high levels of natural gas reserves to ensure energy security. In the state of Vorarlberg, gas storage levels managed by illwerke vkw have reached 85 percent. This is significantly higher than the European Union average of 63 percent, as well as the national averages for Germany (51 percent) and Austria (65 percent).

While Vorarlberg’s specific storage capacity covers approximately 32 percent of its annual consumption, Austria’s total national storage capacity is large enough to theoretically meet more than the country’s entire annual gas requirement. Current national reserves are estimated to cover about 82 percent of Austria’s annual needs. Additionally, the country maintains a strategic gas reserve of 20,000 GWh.

Experts note that current filling levels are slightly lower than in previous years due to rising gas prices, which have increased from 33 euros to 66 euros per megawatt-hour on the exchange. Despite these fluctuations, officials state that Austria’s robust storage infrastructure and strategic reserves provide a competitive advantage and greater supply security compared to several other European nations.
