Austria energy security and consumption trends

Austria has focused on maintaining energy security through robust natural gas reserves. In the state of Vorarlberg, gas storage levels reached 85 percent, exceeding both the European Union average and national averages for Germany and Austria. While rising gas prices caused filling levels to be slightly lower than in previous years, national reserves remain sufficient to theoretically meet the country’s entire annual gas requirement.

However, energy patterns have shifted due to environmental factors. In July, electricity demand rose by 1.6 percent while gas consumption fell by 2.2 percent. Extreme drought led to a 16.9 percent drop in domestic electricity production, specifically impacting run-of-river power plants, which saw a 43.6 percent decline in production due to low river levels. To compensate for this shortfall, electricity imports increased by 54.4 percent.

In response to these shifts, community initiatives have emerged to address energy poverty, with donors in regions like Salzburg providing surplus solar power to low-income households.
