Austria summer tourism strong in bookings, hoteliers stay cautious

Austria’s summer tourism season began with a 12% rise in May overnight stays, the highest recorded peak since statistics began. While the overall booking volume is solid, hotel association Georg Imlauer warned that average room rates remain below previous years and revenue is still lacking. He cited high staff, energy and administrative costs and noted that June performance was mixed, with city hotels faring better than resort locations. Imlauer also called for visitor‑flow management in Salzburg and highlighted stalled collective‑bargaining talks, with employers offering only modest wage increases.

In Lower Austria, accommodation providers report a stable and good booking outlook. Private lodging such as farm stays, apartments and holiday houses grew 4.2% year‑on‑year, driven by active and wellness holidays, spontaneous bookings and family trips. Popular areas include the Waldviertel, Wiener Alpen and Mostviertel, attracting guests from Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Visitors favor hiking, cycling, farm‑stay experiences and cultural events such as the Raimundspiele and local summer festivals.
