Austria summer tourism surge & Vision T rollout

Entities: Olga Kefalogianni · EURES · Elisabeth Zehetner · Kyriakos Mitsotakis · Christian Stocker

Overview

Austria’s tourism sector continued its upward trajectory in July 2026, posting the strongest early‑summer figures on record since the series began in 1973/74. Provisional data showed 22.35 million overnight stays in May and June, a 1.5 % year‑on‑year gain, while total international arrivals rose 2.9 % to 15.1 million nights. Growth was led by visitors from Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and an 8.4 % jump from the United States. Tourism Secretary Elisabeth Zehetner said the results reflect confidence in Austria’s hospitality standards and linked them directly to the newly unveiled “Vision T” framework (2025‑2035), which aims to sustain competitiveness, create regional value, streamline bureaucracy, improve infrastructure and stabilise the workforce.

Zehetner met Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni during the Salzburg Festival to deepen bilateral cooperation. The talks focused on securing seasonal labour for Austria’s winter 2025/26 season, with a goal of recruiting roughly 2,000 Greek workers through a new digital platform that integrates the EU EURES network. Pilot projects with Greece and Cyprus are slated for summer and autumn, and a dedicated recruitment event will be held in Greece. Both governments will also exchange expertise—Austria on mountain tourism and Greece on agrotourism, barrier‑free and sustainable destination development. Chancellor Christian Stocker and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis endorsed the initiative, emphasizing year‑round tourism as a way to provide planning security, stable jobs and added regional value while reducing bureaucratic hurdles.
