Austria conducts nationwide civil protection siren and AT-Alert drill
Austria conducted its annual nationwide civil protection drill on October 3, 2026, to test the functionality of its emergency warning systems. The exercise involved more than 8,000 sirens across the country, including 180 in Vienna and approximately 230 in Vorarlberg.
During the drill, four distinct siren signals were tested: a 15-second technical test, a three-minute warning signal, a one-minute alarm signal, and a one-minute all-clear signal. In addition to physical sirens, the mobile warning system AT-Alert was utilized to send test messages to compatible mobile phones via cell broadcast technology. In Vienna, the test also included the DAB+ radio warning channel.
Regional reports indicated successful outcomes. In Tyrol, 99.7 percent of the 1,025 sirens functioned correctly, and the AT-Alert system was successfully deployed by both the Ministry of the Interior and the provincial emergency center. The drill serves to ensure technical reliability and to familiarize the public with the different signals and necessary response actions.
