Austria conducts nationwide civil protection drill

Overview

Austria conducted its annual nationwide civil protection drill on October 3, 2026, to test the functionality of its emergency warning systems. The exercise involved more than 8,000 sirens across the country, including 180 in Vienna and approximately 230 in Vorarlberg.

The drill tested four distinct siren signals: a 15-second technical test, a three-minute warning signal, a one-minute alarm signal, and a one-minute all-clear signal. Alongside physical sirens, the AT-Alert mobile warning system utilized cell broadcast technology to send test messages to compatible mobile phones. In Vienna, the test also incorporated the DAB+ radio warning channel.

Regional reports indicated successful outcomes. In Tyrol, 99.7 percent of the 1,025 sirens functioned correctly, and the AT-Alert system was successfully deployed by both the Ministry of the Interior and the provincial emergency center. The drill is intended to ensure technical reliability and to familiarize the public with various signals and required response actions.
