Gerhard Zeiler challenges Andreas Babler for SPÖ leadership

Gerhard Zeiler, a prominent media executive and former RTL chief currently at Warner Bros. Discovery, has announced his intention to run for the leadership of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ). Zeiler stated he believes he is the right person to lead the party out of its current historical low, where it currently polls at approximately 15 percent.

Incumbent party leader and Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler has rejected the notion of stepping down, asserting he has a clear mandate following his reelection in March. Babler characterized the news as rumors and emphasized his commitment to ongoing government projects.

The potential leadership challenge has created significant political tension within the SPÖ. While some regional organizations have expressed support for Babler, others, such as the Burgenland branch, have voiced opposition to Zeiler. To trigger a leadership vote, Zeiler would likely need to collect signatures from 10 to 12 percent of party members or seek an extraordinary party congress.
