Austria tourism sector faces digital registration and labor shortages

The Austrian tourism industry is navigating significant regulatory changes and staffing uncertainties ahead of the winter season. A new tourism law, set for implementation in November, mandates digital registration for guests. While this transition poses challenges for private hosts without digital infrastructure, provincial Councilor Sebastian Schuschnig stated that municipal offices and tourism bureaus will provide support by manually entering data into the digital system for them.

Simultaneously, tourism businesses are facing delays in securing seasonal labor. Susanne Kraus-Winkler of the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKÖ) has criticized Labor Minister Korinna Schumann regarding the missing regulation for seasonal worker quotas. Because the national quota was only 63.4 percent utilized in July—falling below the 75 percent threshold required for automatic extension—the entire quota must be re-issued. This delay threatens the ability to issue necessary work permits and visas for the thousands of seasonal workers required for the upcoming season.
