Greek firefighters killed as Crete and Peloponnese wildfires rage FAST-MOVING

On 29 July 2026 a wildfire ignited near the village of Krya Vrysi in the Rethymno region of Crete. Strong winds of up to Beaufort 7‑11 (about 100 km/h) drove the fire out of control, spreading toward nearby tourist areas.

Three Greek firefighters lost their lives while battling the blaze: two were trapped while moving between fire fronts on Crete and a third died in a separate fire in the Peloponnese near Gytheio. About 150‑190 firefighters, 33 fire engines, several helicopters and aircraft were deployed to the scene.

Residents and tourists were evacuated from Krya Vrysi and surrounding villages. The EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre warned that Greece and Italy face a heightened wildfire risk in the coming weeks, as similar fires continue across Spain and France.
