Austria drought fuels fire risk, EU resources stretched

Entities: Rethymno region · France · Dr. Armin Kaltenegger · European Union · Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit (KFV)

Overview

Mid‑July 2026 Austrian authorities warned that a spring drought had left soils around Vienna extremely dry, creating an acute risk of forest fires. The national transport safety board later reported 269 fires, most human‑caused, and noted that EU disaster‑relief aircraft were being dispatched to other hotspots, limiting their availability for Austria.

The EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre sent aircraft and personnel to Greece, where a fast‑moving wildfire on Crete killed three firefighters – two on Crete and one in a separate blaze on the Peloponnese – as winds reached Beaufort 7‑11. On 29 July the blaze ignited near Krya Vrysi in the Rethymno region, prompting the deployment of 150‑190 firefighters, 33 fire engines and several helicopters and aircraft, and the evacuation of residents and tourists from Krya Vrysi and nearby villages. The Centre warned that Greece and Italy face heightened wildfire risk in the coming weeks, underscoring the strain on shared EU firefighting assets and the potential for reduced assistance to Austria as the drought persists.
