Austrian and Swiss drivers caught speeding at 180 km/h and 172 km/h, licences suspended

On July 9 2026 a 21‑year‑old driver on Austria’s A10 St. Michael‑Lungau stretch was detected travelling at 180 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. Police stopped the vehicle, temporarily revoked his licence, seized the car and filed a traffic violation charge.

A separate incident involved a 22‑year‑old German driver who, early Wednesday, raced through Switzerland’s 16.9‑km Gotthard road tunnel at an average of 171.8 km/h, performed 21 illegal overtaking maneuvers and tested positive on a rapid drug screen. Swiss authorities imposed a nationwide driving ban, required a multi‑thousand‑franc security deposit and opened several criminal proceedings.
