German, Austrian & Swiss traffic policing crackdown
Overview
The multi-country traffic-policing campaign that began in mid-June continued through August, characterized by high-speed pursuits and severe penalties. In Germany, enforcement included a night-time check in Heilbronn on 5 August that resulted in the seizure of a Hyundai i30 N and several violations. On 6 August, a motorcyclist in Saarlouis fled police at speeds of approximately 160 km/h, performing dangerous maneuvers before the pursuit was terminated near Dillingen-Süd. In Austria, authorities reported frequent high-speed and impaired driving incidents. On 7 August, a 25-year-old German national was intercepted on the A22 in Vienna driving a rental car at up to 190 km/h without a license. In Wels, a 22-year-old man who fled a motorcycle officer was found to have consumed cocaine and had previously lost his license for drug-related driving. Additionally, a 65-year-old man was stopped twice for operating a bicycle with a blood alcohol level of 1.06 ‰. Other notable incidents include a 17-year-old fleeing police near Lake Achensee and a 26-year-old from Vienna who reached 196 km/h on the A1 before being apprehended in St. Pölten; the latter was found to be unlicensed and positive for narcotics. By mid-August, vehicle seizures and license revocations increased in Austria and Switzerland. In Lower Austria, 154 cars have been confiscated since March 2024. In Switzerland, a German resident near Hallau had his motorcycle seized after being recorded at 177 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. Recent enforcement in Austria includes the seizure of a vehicle and license from a 19-year-old in Styria after he was caught driving 190 km/h in an 80 km/h zone near Graz. On 5 September, a high-speed chase in Lustenau, Austria, concluded with the arrest of a 23-year-old man. The pursuit began when officers attempted to stop a BMW due to an unfastened child.
