Austrian Armed Forces report increase in personnel

The Austrian Armed Forces (Bundesheer) has reported a net increase in personnel for the current year. As of early September 2026, the organization recorded 2,200 new entries—comprising both military and civilian staff—against 1,719 departures, resulting in a total growth of 481 employees.

Among the new recruits, 409 were women, with 107 entering uniformed service. The majority of personnel turnover involves fixed-term positions, such as temporary military personnel and administrative interns. This growth aligns with modernization efforts under the ‘Aufbauplan 2032+’ initiative.

In September 2026, 1,065 candidates began officer and non-commissioned officer training, including 75 women. Training paths include a six-month initial phase, followed by specialized tracks: an 18-month program at the Army Non-Commissioned Officer Academy in Enns or a three-year course at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt.

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner attributed the trend to improved recruitment strategies and the attractiveness of public service. However, observers note that the military faces ongoing competition with the private sector for skilled technical and logistical personnel.
