Austrian Armed Forces personnel growth
Overview
The Austrian Armed Forces (Bundesheer) has seen a rise in personnel during 2026. In August, approximately 200 recruits, including twelve women, were sworn into service in Türnitz to serve with the Guard in Vienna and the Military Command of Lower Austria.
By early September, the organization reported a net increase of 481 employees, consisting of 2,200 new entries against 1,719 departures. This growth includes both military and civilian staff, with 409 women among the new recruits. Additionally, 1,065 candidates commenced officer and non-commissioned officer training.
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner attributed this trend to improved recruitment strategies and the attractiveness of public service, noting that the growth aligns with the ‘Aufbauplan 2032+’ modernization initiative. However, the military continues to face competition from the private sector for technical and logistical personnel.
