Austrian Army and German Bundeswehr launch new recruitment initiatives

In September 2026, the Austrian Bundesheer will begin training around 90 young men and women as apprentices in more than 50 vocational occupations, ranging from electrical engineering and IT to logistics and traditional crafts. The apprenticeships will be offered in all Austrian states except Burgenland and Vorarlberg, with positions located in barracks and training centres. Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner said the programme aims to provide practical skills, team‑building and career prospects for participants.

At the same time, Germany’s Bundeswehr is rolling out a new YouTube series called “Generation Wehrdienst” to attract recruits. The series will document the experiences of new soldiers during the modernised basic training, covering arrival, uniform fitting, ceremonial oath, combat exercises and bivouac life. Produced without a script, it will feature commentary from trainees, families and instructors and will be released on YouTube and Joyn from early July through November, with additional clips on TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Reddit. Three seasons are planned, building on the success of earlier Bundeswehr web series that amassed over 18.5 million views.
