Austrian healthcare workers warn of risks from proposed budget cuts

Healthcare workers and academic staff in Austria are raising alarms over proposed budget cuts that threaten medical services and patient care.

In Styria, an online petition led by Michaela Göschl opposes a proposed 30 million euro reduction in hospital budgets for 2027. The initiative warns that staff are already at their limit and that further financial constraints could exacerbate workload issues, increase patient waiting times, and jeopardize the quality of care. The petition specifically targets regional leadership, citing concerns that rising patient numbers and declining full-time staff availability create a precarious situation for the future of regional health services.

Simultaneously, the works council for scientific staff at the Medical University of Vienna has issued an open letter to federal ministers and the Vienna city government. They warn that proposed university budget reductions could result in a 14 percent funding decrease for MedUni Wien. Such a cut could jeopardize approximately 200 medical positions and 500 administrative and preclinical roles. Staff representatives warn that these shortages could lead to the closure of operating rooms, outpatient clinics, and hospital beds, as well as the loss of weekend and holiday services, posing significant health risks to patients with chronic or rare diseases.
