Austrian officials propose constitutional ban on political Islam

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP) has called for a constitutional ban on political Islam, stating that its use is incompatible with democracy and Western values. Stocker emphasized that while religious freedom remains a priority, the state must respond with strength when religion is utilized for political purposes.

In response to these remarks, Integration Minister Claudia Bauer (ÖVP) announced plans to rapidly develop a proposal for such a ban. Bauer described political Islam as ‘the greatest danger of our time’ and intends to use the government program as a basis for a broad package of measures involving association and cult law. She aims to present this proposal to coalition partners SPÖ and Neos as soon as possible.

The proposal has drawn sharp criticism from the FPÖ. General Secretary Michael Schnedlitz labeled the ÖVP’s stance as ‘unbelievable political theater’ and ‘hypocrisy,’ questioning why the party has historically voted against FPÖ motions regarding similar bans while now proposing its own measure.
