Austrian political parties face shifting poll numbers and economic pressure
Recent polling data indicates a significant shift in the Austrian political landscape. According to a Lazarsfeld Society survey from October 2026, the FPÖ has reached a projected 41 percent support, while the ÖVP has fallen to 20 percent and the SPÖ to 14 percent.
Public dissatisfaction is linked to several key issues, including inflation, employment, and immigration. A Gallup Institute survey from May 2026 showed that 64 percent of citizens believe the government's asylum and migration policies are not strict enough, while 71 percent expressed concerns regarding security.
In Upper Austria, ÖVP Governor Thomas Stelzer has called for stronger economic impulses from the federal government. Facing a competitive election cycle, Stelzer emphasized the need for better tax frameworks for business investments, increased research and development support, and a national economic stimulus program to complement regional initiatives like 'Impuls26'.
